Underwater Acoustic Barrier (UAB) project sea trial
2 - 15 September 2007, Hopavagen Bay and Trondheimsfjord, Norway.
1. Objectives: the UAB’07 sea trial fulfills the generic objectives of the UAB project
namely:
- to test at sea but in controled conditions the acoustic barrier concept using an array of sources
and an array of receivers at various ranges, depths, frequencies, transmitted signals, with stationary and
moving obstacles, etc.
- to test various modulation schemes for underwater acoustic communication between an array of sources and
an array of receivers (MIMO)
- to test in controlled conditions the environmental based equalizer for passive time reversal
communications
2. Means to be employed:
R/V Gunnerus |
Hopavagen Bay/Sletvik Station |
R/V Calanus |

3. Personnel:
University of Algarve: S.M. Jesus, A. Silva, F. Zabel and C. Martins.
NTNU: A. Neyts, J. Hovem
4. Equipment:
- Acoustic - Oceanographic Buoy (AOB): model 22, 16 hyd, 66 m apertura
- Acoustic sound source Lubell 1442 and generator
- 2 Acoustic sources Lubel 916 C
5. Test areas:
- Site 1 - TBS in Trondheim Bay
- Site 2 - Hopavagen Bay (Sletvik Station)
6. Operations day by day:
August 30: UALG equipment arrives in Trondheim both from Faro and US;
August 31: 14:00 UALG team arriving in Oslo; Oslo - Trondheim by train;
September 1: 08:00 UALG team arrives in Trondheim;
September 3: equipment installation at the Trondehim Biological Station (TBS); visit to the
Sletvik station as preparation for the next week experiment;

September 4: first day acoustic communications transmissions along the TBS transect for
passive time-reversal using the R/V Gunnerus; CTDs along the transect;
September 5: second day acoustic communications transmissions along the TBS transect for
testing the waveguide invariant depth/range compensation using the R/V Gunnerus;
