Project OAEx, Plan of Work (short version)

The proposed plan of work to be followed under OAEx is as follows:

  • WP1: Initial assessment of conditions on sites (month 1-9)

    WP leader: CINTAL
Objectives: To assess the initial conditions, design experiments for implementing a monitoring station in Brazil and perform modeling and preliminary simulations. Review plans for development of underwater acoustic networking in Canada.
Task 1.1: work preparation in Brazil
    Task leader: CINTAL
Partners involved: CINTAL, ULB, COPPE, IEAPM, C-MARS
This first task will be devoted to an initial workshop for assessing conditions on the Cabo Frio site, compiling archival data and installing tools for modelling and simulations.

Task 1.2 :plans for development of an underwater acoustic network
    Task leader: C-MARS
    Partners involved: CINTAL, ULB, C-MARS
This task will involve technical visits to C-MARS partner to review the plans for implementation and development of an underwater acoustic communication network at the Saanich Inlet test site for NEPTUNECANADA.
    Deliverables
    D1.1 (CINTAL, month 9): workshop #1 proceedings

  • WP2: Interdisciplinary simulation study and processing of experimental data (month 7-30)

    WP leader: IEAPM
Objectives: To develop a detailed environmental model of Cabo Frio area and then perform an ocean-acoustic simulation study. To prepare and participate in eventual joint at sea experiments in Brazil nearby IEAPM Cabo Frio premises and to carry out acoustic inversion to characterize the acoustic communication channel.
    Task 2.1:Simulation study
    Task leader: ULB
Partners involved: COPPE, IEAPM, CINTAL, ULB
To exchange scientific personnel for building an environmental model of Cabo Frio suitable for acoustic simulation purposes (based on the collected archival data and installed tools of WP1) and for running simulations to guide the design of the monitoring system.

Task 2.2: Sea trial planning and execution.
    Task leader: IEAPM
Partners involved: CINTAL, ULB, COPPE, IEAPM
To exchange scientific and technical personnel for instruction on sea trial planning and on how to operate and control at sea equipments as a preparation for sea trials to be carried out nearby IEAPM Cabo Frio area in Brazil. Acoustic data gathering will be conditional to obtaining suitable funding for maintenance and transportation of acoustic equipment. The present exchange will ensure the participation of the EU partners scientific personnel while at sea equipment (except acoustical parts and instruments), naval support and technical personnel support will be made available by partner IEAPM. The sea trial will obtain acoustic data for environmental inversion and communication testing purposes with supporting of standard hydrographic data. In the event no acoustic sea trial can be performed on due time, existing experimental acoustic data will be made available by the EU partners for acoustic inversion training (Task 2.4).
    Task 2.3: Communication equipment testing
    Task leader: C-MARS
    Partners involved: CINTAL, ULB, C-MARS
This task will involve the participation of ULB and CINTAL personnel in a communication equipment testing and carry out acoustic inversion experiments to characterize the communication channel at the NEPTUNECANADA test site. Scientific exchange for data processing and determining communication channel performance on Saanich Inlet (Canada) data set.
    Task 2.4: Real data analysis
    Task leader: IEAPM
Partners involved: CINTAL, COPPE, IEAPM, ULB, C-MARS
Scientific exchange between EU partners and Brazil to perform a preliminary analysis of available acoustic data for environmental inversion (ocean bottom and water column) and for communication channel characterization on existing archival data or on the Cabo Frio (Brazil) data sets (depending on Task 2.2).
    Deliverables
D2.1 (IEAPM, month 30): Cabo Frio simulation and/or experimental data report
D2.2 (C-MARS, month 36): acoustic equipment testing report
D2.3 (All, month 42): Eventual publications (journal and/or conference proceedings)

  • WP3: Achievements, lessons learned and perspectives (month 28-36)

    WP leader: ULB
Objectives: To critically review the technological and scientific progress being made during the three years of exchange and discuss plans of future collaboration with Brazil and Canada.
    Task 3.1: Acoustic inversion aspects
    Task leader: ULB
Partners involved: CINTAL, ULB, COPPE, IEAPM, C-MAR
This task will focus on the inverse problem itself for the environmental site acoustic characterization and modelling taking as examples both the Cabo Frio test site and the Saanich Inlet area.
Task 3.2: Communication aspects (scientific and technological)
    Task leader: CINTAL
Partners involved: CINTAL, ULB, COPPE, IEAPM
This task will focus on the scientific and technological communication aspects and will be implemented under the form of a final project workshop.
    Task 3.3: Underwater acoustic networking
    Task leader: C-MARS
    Partners involved: CINTAL, ULB, C-MARS
This task will focus on assessment of networking problems with underwater cabled observatories and evaluation of experience with acoustic communications channels.
    Deliverables
    D3.1 (ULB, month 42): Workshop #2 proceedings
D3.2 (All, month 42): Eventual publications made with the contribution of the OAEX exchange program.
