Jul 1-2, 2020: deploying SWAN buoys 1, 2 and 3 off Sougia (southwest of Crete, Greece)

Emmanuel Skarsoulis and his team (FORTH) reported a successful deployment three acoustic buoys in the Sougia bay for detecting, monitoring and localizing cetaceans along the Helenic Trench off SW tip of Crete. The objective is, after detection and localization to issue a early warning to ships cruising the area in order to avoid potential and deadly ship strikes, thus contributing to SAVE the WHALES.

Nov 23, 2019: testing the SWAN buoy in Sougia (southwest of Crete, Greece)

Emmanuel Skarsoulis and his team reported a successful communication test with various SAVE WHALES buoy componentes deployed at sea near Sougia. Deployed devices could be remotely reached from Heraklion through the remote links provided by antennas positioned in the surrounding moutains. Spirits are high for actual deployment in spring 2020.
