Project TOMPACO, Plan of Work

The following milestones are foreseen under TOMPACO:
  1. Phase 1 - Acquisition of tomographic data for the TOMPACO project during the Intifante'99 sea trial: To achieve the objective, at least one day of acoustical data will be acquired for passive tomography purpose to comply with the TOMPACO project aims. Active tomography data acquired during other days of the sea trial will also be made available whenever necessary to support TOMPACO aims. Acoustic data will be received on a 16-element vertical line array under various source receiver geometries and configurations. At least the following topics will be covered by the data: active known transmitted signals, known pseudo-random transmitted signals and ship self-generated signals. Source and receiver configurations and relative positions will be known to the best possible precision. Environmental data, including sound speed profiles, current data, bathymetry will be gathered to support data acoustic data processing and validation and made available to all parties.
  2. Phase 2 - Consultancy for data processing of active tomography data and output validation/interpretation: This phase includes running and testing acoustic models for modelling of the forward problem in the area of the sea trial. The inverse problem for estimating water column temperature will be treated with two complementary/concurrent approaches: either by simple comparison with the forward problem and/or by direct blind inversion using global optimization techniques. Primary goal is to inverse mean temperature over the source-receiver cross-section and its evolution through time. Inversion of range dependent temperature will also be attempted under this phase. Validation and interpretation of the obtained inversions will be made by comparison with the acquired hydrological data, historical data from the sea trial site and circulation models interpretation whenever needed and available.
  3. Phase 3 - Consultancy for processing and data interpretation for passive tomography: Selected portions of the data will be used for forward modelling using passive data. Inversion for the water column temperature will be attempted in the same data sets and comparison and validation with the forward case will be made.
