Project WEAM, Plan of Work

The proposed plan of work to be followed under WEAM is as follows:
  1. Measurement of noise generated by Wave Energy Device (WED), at minimum possible distance for assessment of its main features.
  2. Transmission loss (TL) modelling under realistic environmental characteristics, using in-situ recorded noise as an attempt to anticipate SPL across the area of impact and maximum ranges of impact.
  3. Establish noise monitoring strategies based on simulation results and other issues. This includes obtaining measurement system specifications.
  4. Develop noise measurement system according to specifications established in previous steps and assumptions on WED generated noise.
  5. Monitor noise produced by up to three different WEDs and analyse the resulting data sets.
  6. Extrapolate impact of the presence of a large number of WEDs in a given area.
  7. Establish impact on marine mammals; investigate with support of state-of-the-art literature on the impact of man-made noise on marine mammals.
  8. Validate monitoring strategy; establish guide lines for monitoring WED generated noise.
